Overview

Taylor’s Quinta de Vargellas 2019 is a “Single-Quinta” Vintage Port from the prestigious estate Quinta de Vargellas — one of the most celebrated vineyards in the Douro Valley, owned by Taylor's Port. The 75 cl bottle delivers a refined, elegant, and age-worthy expression of vintage Port: concentrated, structured yet elegant, with pure fruit and classic Douro character.

Quinta de Vargellas is widely regarded as among the finest vineyards of the Douro, prized for producing ports of exceptional quality, complexity and longevity.

Vineyard & Winemaking — Terroir & Harvest 2019

  • Estate & terroir: The grapes come exclusively from Quinta de Vargellas — a “Class A” vineyard located in the rugged, terraced slopes of the eastern Douro Valley. Its schist-rich soils and steep slopes contribute to grapes with intensity, finesse and distinctive Douro minerality.

  • Harvest & vintage conditions (2019): The 2019 season at Vargellas began with an early budburst (early March), followed by a growing season that was overall cooler and slightly drier than average, though with heavy April rains. As the grapes began colouring (véraison), the July-August period remained relatively moderate — cooler than average in August, with some rainfall late in the month — which helped preserve high natural acidity and freshness.

  • These conditions produced grapes with good colour intensity, healthy skins, and lively acidity — excellent for crafting a vintage Port with clarity, freshness, and ageing potential.

  • Winemaking / Maturation: The grapes are traditionally foot-tread in granite lagares, then fermented (under controlled conditions), preserving the purity of fruit and structure. The wine is matured in seasoned oak vats for about 18–24 months before bottling — unfiltered, to allow full development and long-term ageing.

Tasting Notes — Colour, Aroma & Palate

Colour: Deep, intense purple-black core with a narrow magenta or red rim — typical of young Vintage Ports from Vargellas.

Nose (Aroma): The bouquet is polished and precise, marked by pure bright fruit — dominant notes of raspberry and cherry — giving a sense of freshness and “singing” fruit quality. Around this fruit core are subtle botanical and forest-floor notes: wild herbs, woodland undergrowth (fern, bracken), wildflowers, and a hint of wood/resin or gentle spice. This layering gives the wine an elegant, complex aromatic profile.

Palate & Structure: On the palate, the wine is compact, racy and refined — with linear, fine-grained tannins and a lively, vibrant acidity that gives a sense of freshness despite its richness. The “bright fruit” of raspberry, cherry and fresh grapes re-emerges, now joined by plum, darker berry notes, slight mineral tension, and subtle spiciness or darkness (hints of bitter chocolate or graphite / mineral edge depending on bottle and age)

The finish is long, elegant, and persistent, with the fruit and acidity lingering, and the structure offering poised tannins that promise good ageing.

Overall — the wine shows a signature “Vargellas” quality: refined, fragrant, fruit-driven yet structured enough for long-term ageing, with elegance and balance rather than mere power.
